Your Station - Behind the Scenes

Reception/Sales

The administrative hub of Spirit FM includes the public reception area plus the Sales team (Marie, Sally, Simone, Ali and Chris) who are based here when they’re not out and about in West Sussex meeting clients and advertisers!

If you’re visiting Spirit FM on business, to collect a prize or to just pick up a car sticker, Milly will always be here to help - with a smile and a wave ... and maybe even a song!

Newsroom

The heart of Spirit FM’s news operation is home to 3 duty journalists, who have access to state-of-the-art communications technology to bring you the latest news stories from across West Sussex and around the world!

The news team research hundreds of contacts built up over the years, plus the worldwide resources of IRN, who provide national and international news feeds via satellite and the internet.

On Saturday afternoons, Spirit FM's coverage of West Sussex sport is second to none. With regular live reports from around the county, plus - in an exclusive media partnership with 'The Rocks' - news from Bognor's famous football team!

Studios

There are two main studios - one for the "on-air" presenter, and another, slightly smaller news and production studio. Both are equipped with the latest state-of-the-art digital recording, editing and playback facilities, plus a PC-based ‘content server’ providing audio storage, and automated playout for music, jingles, adverts and news material. Both studios have ISDN connections for studio quality interviews from remote locations and live travel news etc.

Spirit FM’s outside broadcast vehicle is fully equipped with a complete radio studio, either for live transmission back to Dukes Court or to record music, concerts, news gathering or other events for later broadcast.  In addition, the Spirit FM Roadshow is available for live events, providing PA facilities and a stage area.

Transmitters and technical stuff

The nerve centre of Spirit FM lies in a small room under the stairs, packed to the gunnels with technical equipment and flashing lights! The output from the studios is digitally processed and encoded before distribution via a ‘line of sight’ microwave link to the primary transmitter site on top of the South Downs near Goodwood.

Spirit FM's main transmitter (96.6MHz) beams a powerful stereo signal across South West Sussex. Coverage extends from the Hampshire border, taking in Havant, Emsworth, Chichester, Bognor Regis and the Selsey peninsula, and eastwards along the Sussex coast to West Worthing.

A relay transmitter (102.3MHz) near Angmering, in the east of the region boosts the signal in Arundel, Littlehampton and in the villages around Rustington and West Worthing.

In September 2004, a third transmitter (106.6MHz) went on-air, extending coverage to the whole of West Sussex, north of The Downs, including Midhurst, Petworth, Pulborough, Billingshurst and beyond.

RDS information (PS=SPIRIT PI=andC5B1 PTY=Pop Music) RadioText and a dynamically controlled travel news flag (TA) is transmitted on all services.
